The photo page of a passport carries no home address, so you would need a separate utility bill or bank statement to go with it. How do you photograph your ID the right way?

The reviewer approves what they can read. A sharp, well-lit photo goes through in minutes; a dark or angled one waits in a queue and often bounces. Follow these steps and you rarely need a second attempt.

1. Lay the document flat on a plain, dark surface. A wooden table or a closed book works.
2. Turn on the room lights and switch your camera flash off. Flash creates a white glare that hides the text.
3. Hold the phone directly above the card, not at an angle, so all four corners sit inside the frame.
4. Fill about 80 percent of the shot with the document. Leave a thin margin, but do not crop any edge.
5. Tap the screen to focus, then check that the name, number and dates are all readable before you send.
6. For a driver licence or ID card, repeat for the back. For a passport, capture the photo page in full.

Upload the original file. Screenshots, scans reduced to thumbnail size, or images passed through a filter tend to lose detail the reviewer needs. Colour photos taken straight from your phone gallery are ideal.

File size matters more than people expect. Most upload forms accept JPG, PNG or PDF up to around 10 MB, which any modern phone photo sits well under. If your image is rejected for size, it is usually too small rather than too large, because a heavily compressed shot loses the fine print. Send the full-resolution copy. Daylight near a window beats overhead bulbs, since it spreads evenly and casts fewer hard shadows across the card.

What mistakes get an upload rejected?

Most rejections come down to a handful of avoidable problems. Run through this list before you tap submit and you will skip the back-and-forth entirely.

• Cut-off corners. If any edge sits outside the frame, the document is treated as incomplete. Reframe and reshoot.
• Glare or shadow. A bright spot across the photo or your own shadow over the card hides key details. Move to softer, even light.

• Expired document. A licence that lapsed last month no longer counts. Check the date before you upload.
